A Bold vision for HEALTH: Farmers Hold the Key
Farmers, like doctors, hold our lives in their hands. Farmers are the stewards of the soil and provide a huge community benefit through how they tend the land. Healthy rich soils hold water, provide nutrients and life to our society. By supporting our farmers with the right tools and resources we can set them up for success to grow healthy food and provide one of the most effective ways to deal with climate change and carbon sequestration. Farmers together with researchers on our team from UCSF and UC Berkeley are currently investigating how healthy biodiverse soil impacts human health by way of the connection between the soil and human gut microbiomes, potentially decreasing inflammation which plays a role in all the diseases we treat, including heart disease, diabetes, depression, obesity, autism, Alzheimers, cancer and auto-immune disease. We believe through these innovative partnerships across disciplines and sectors, we can advance truly holistic health in our state--for everyone.
